GA - Welcome to a special edition of "Meet the Playa". I'm your host Greg Anthony and with me here today is the coach/GM of the And1 team. Welcome coach.
AC - Thanks.
GA - Scandal rocked the CSSL late Yesterday when two players were caught in what can only be described as "illegal activities". One of these players was And1's star point guard Starbury and the other was his close friend and And1's first round pick, Q-York. How did you take the news coach?
AC - At first I was in a state of shock. I couldn't believe it. Then I was upset. Now i'm just plain p*ssed off.
GA - Now due to these "illegal activities" both players have been kicked out of the league, correct?
AC - Yes. Both Starbury and Q-York have been kicked out of the league and will not be allowed to return. It is a permanent ban.
GA - This has to be a huge blow to And1.
AC - NO S*IT GREG! I'm sorry, it's just that i'm still upset about it if you can't tell.
GA - Starbury was a great player for you. He was your team's topp scorer and a perennial MVP candidate. How do you replace a guy like that?
AC - You don't. There were only one or two guys better than him at the point. Now we are reduced to having a rookie run the show. Exile is solid but i'd be lying if I didn't say that he was a bit of a drop off at the position.
GA - This leaves you with only 5 guys on the roster. Have you made any arrangement to get some more players?
AC - Who? There's nobody left to sign. Everyone is already signeed to a team so it's just gonna be 5 players through the end of the season.
GA - This team had recently made great stides to become a Championship contender. You had a great draft, you made a great trade for Mad D, and then you followed it up with a great trade to get Masterlock. Can you still contend?
AC - Contend for what? The Championship? Not with only 5 guys. We still have a pretty good starting 5 but it's just now enough to really compete. We'll try our best but things are looking bleak.
GA - Has the league stepped forward and offered assistance or compensation?
AC - They apologized and made an offer but it really doesn't help the team. What And1 needs is players or draft picks and we got neither.
GA - You sound as if the league has let you down.
AC - I think that it has. We go from a Championship contender to a joke overnight. We lose our starting point guard, who is a MVP quality player, and we lose our first round pick. And1 did nothing wrong! We get virtually nothing in return.
GA - That is awfully harsh. How are your players taking it?
AC- I haven't had a chnace to talk to them but they have to feel as if they got screwed over too. Once again, they did nothing wrong but are taking the brunt fo the penalty. It not their fault and it's not fair. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
GA - This season is two thirds over already. At least there are going to be a lot of free agents available in the off-season. And1 will have plaenty of cap space to go after them.
AC - I can't say that matter to me any.
GA - Woah coach! That doesn't sound very positive. You are going to remain with And1 aren't you?
AC - No comment.
GA - Wow! I'm suprised by that but at the same time, somehow, i'm not. We're out of time but I really wnat to thank the coach here for coming on our show in the middle of such a tough time.
