Misconceptions in the CSSL
Mister O. Pinion
Mister O. Pinion
In today's edition, I'll attack some of the wrong beliefs that I hear from many of today's fans.
Belief: "(Player A) is doing so much better than (Player B), because (Player A) has so many more assists!"
Truth: That MIGHT be true. But often times, it's not. Let's look in depth. Often, players are placed at point guard, and for that simple reason it looks like their numbers are better. However, once they're moved to shooting guard, those glamour stats don't look so good anymore. Some of the best players in the league are playing the 2-guard, with great all-around play and defense, but because they're not asked to get a lot of assists even though they could, people feel they're not doing as well. That's just flat-out wrong.
Which brings me to my next point.
Belief: "Making your point guard the #1 option is a really good idea. Just look, he's averaging 25 pts and 9 assists a game!"
Truth: Yes, but look at his teammates. The other top scorer on the team, your small forward or whatever, isn't getting enough shots, and so his points are too low. And your point guard's putting up a lot of points, but shooting at a poor percentage relative to the rest of the league. Instead, you could be spreading the ball around, getting the whole team's shooting percentage, and in turn points, go up, and allowing your point guard's assists totals to go from average or below to among the tops in the league.
One more for today.
Belief: "(Player A)'s one of the best defensive players in the league. Look at all those blocks/steals!"
Truth: Uh huh. And whenever he misses those steal or block attempts, his opponent has an easy score because nobody bothered to raise the player's post, perimeter, and drive defense. See: Allen Iverson, young Raef LaFrentz. Blocks and steals are good defensive plays, but there's more to defense than just that. One of the best ways to evaluate D is to look at a player's upgraded ratings.
I'll take down more misconceptions later. For now, keep readin', City Slam fans.
