His name is Michael Henson. Like most players in the CSSL he is better known by his nickname which happens to be "Hurricane". This little known player has suddenly become one of the most talked about players in the CSSL.
Hurricane was originally a late entry into the league. He was so late that he missed both the summer league and the entry draft. He had the skills but hadn't had a chance to show them off. So this unproven and undrafted no name rookie had to find a team.
That didn't prove to be very difficult. Within a few hours of joining the league, Hurricane was approached by three different teams who were interested in his services. Two of the teams entered into a bidding war and Hurricane eventually decided to sign with the league powerhouse, Nike.
The beginning of the season wasn't very exciting for Hurricane. For the first few games he came off of the bench and got only moderate playing time. Although he wasn't scoring a ton of points, the Nike coaching staff saw that Hurricane's defense and solid overall play adn gave him the starting smal forward spot.
Now a starter with more playing time, Hurricane started to put up better numbers. He became a triple double threat every time he stepped on the court. Although not a scoring option, Hurricane was getting noticed by other players and GM's in the league. Nike was the best team in the league and was playing at the top off their game.
Once again it was his overall play and not his scoring that impressed people, enought for him to be named to the All-Star team as a reserve. He only played a disappointed three minutes in that game but was just happy to have been selected.
Immediately after the All-Star game, Hurricane was notified that his name was involved in trade talks with another team. Content with his role on Nike, Hurricane wasn't thrilled about the prospect of being traded. One hour later a deal was done and Hurricane was now on the Converse team.
Hurricane was told by Nike that they hated to see him go and that it was for salary cap reasons. The Nike coach pulled Hurricane aside and told them that he had a great opportunity going to Converse and that this was his chance to show what he could do and become a star in the league.
Apparently The Nike coach knew what he was talking about. Upon his arrival to Converse, Hurricane was put into the starting line up as the main scoring option. He was moved from small forward to shooting guard. Given a new team, a new position, and a new chance, Hurricane didn't disappoint.
Hurricane instantly became the team leader. He stepped up his play scoring 36 points in his first game in a close but losing effort. He followed that with 33 points in a big win in just his second game with the team. Converse was 1-9 in the first half of the season and was already 1-1 in the second half. Hurricane was making a difference.
It was the most recent game that made everyone take notice. Although a losing effort, Hurricane put up a league high 54 points and was game MVP. If there was anyone in the league who didn't know who Hurricane was, they did now. In the three games since the All-Star game, Hurricane is leading the league in scoring with 41 point per game.
And the Converse staff is absolutely thrilled with Hurricane's play. The team has played better and every loss has been close where before they were blow outs. He gives them the big scorer that they lacked while remaining a triple double threat every game. His defense and rebounding have improved along with his scoring making him the complete package.
There are still seven games plus the playoff remaining but from what we have seen, Hurricane in the real deal. He's not ready to be called a superstar just yet but he's darn close. Other teams not only notice Hurricane now but fear him. For an undrafted rookie, that is the ultimate form of respect.
