Draft Picks are very important for a team, no matter what the round. Every single draft pick has something to show for it-it could be a bust, a steal, or just a great pick. In this article we will review famous draft picks and the impact it had on many teams with a reference to the NFL. Then, I will demonstrate how to apply these principles to the CSSL league.
We will use the 1999 NFL Draft for example, just to show good representations of each of the three types, and to describe the impact it had on the club.
Quarterbacks go 2-3-1
Of the top three quarterbacks, Tim Couch was easily the best at the time. Along with him were Donovan McNabb and Akili Smith. Cleveland, at the time, was an expansion team, and they were looking to add a quarterback. Adding Tim Couch with the first overall pick was not very smart for the #1, if we look back on it today. "They passed up Donovan?" Of course! Tim Couch appeared better, but Donovan McNabb was easily the best quarterback there, taken by Philly with the 2nd overall.
And even after that, you may ask, "Why did the fans boo?" Donovan McNabb did not look like the best available-RB Ricky Williams was there too. When Donovan was picked, Philadelphia was sure that was their guy, and look where they are, they are contending!
Thats the first point I need to make. When teams go to scout, they shouldn't look for the best player by points. They should access practices and work them out (by checking the message boards and evaluating the good writers from the week ones).
Tim Couch was a weak #1 overall, and Donovan should have gone first, if Cleveland had done their scouting.
Other Great 1st round picks:RB Edgerrin James, RB Ricky Williams, WR Torry Holt, CB Champ Bailey, CB Chris McCallister, WR David Boston, QB Daunte Culpepper, DE Jevon Kearse
Some first round busts:QB Cade McNown, WR Troy Edwards, CB Fernando Bryant, SS Antuan Edwards
All in the same first round!
Steals:WR Peerless Price (2nd round), MLB Dat Nguyen (3rd Round), OLB Rosevelt Colvin (4th Round), QB Aaron Brooks (4th Round), TE Desmond Clark (6th Round)
Back to the CSSL:What does all of that crap mean?
It means a lot-theres great talent out there, you just gotta search for it. Conduct interviews, read articles, evaluate players, make scouting notes. All of your hard work will pay off at the draft. No matter what draft pick you have, you can still make the most of it. QB Daunte Culpepper and DE Jevon Kearse went in the mid-late 1st round, and they are elite at their positions.
Evaluate what your team needs. An owner has two utility spots on their team, but they do not play as much as the other players do on the team. In the first round, look for great talent but also look for a glaring need. Is that PG not active? Grab Dashmuchmen-an elite guy who is guaranteed to keep on working hard. However, if your team is on the clock, and theres a really great guy you like out there, don't hesitate to take him. Taking an extra active Shooting Guard is better than taking an inactive Center (assuming thats one of your needs).
The second round gets a little harder-the elite talent is gone and this is where scouting comes in. The team that benefits the most from the draft will win some great talent in the 2nd round, and this is where the focus should be placed. Projected 2nd round picks should be watched like you watch a bird, with a keen eye and a great awareness level. Don't be afraid to trade up a few spots to get a guy whos going to be great and a guy that can make an impact on your franchise. The owners are extremely fortunate looking into the offseason-they have a great 10-12 draft picks who will be active for at least the first few "weeks" of the season. Separating the men from the boys, so to speak, is very important here.
The third round is basically the wrap up of the draft. However, just like TE Desmond Clark, there always is one guy out there who will be a steal. Owners have to sort through all of the fools gold to get to this treasure, and when they find it, they will be rewarded nicely. Draft pools get extremely thin here, and most teams probably won't have any use for their draft pick. Some teams decide to trade this pick away for a steady veteran who is dependable. However, 90% of the third round picks probably won't ever come back to the website again.
Summing it up
A great draft is in store for us in the offseason, and all CSSL owners and players are looking forward to a possible expansion and more games. The future of CSSL awaits, and that one third round guy the lucky team drafts may change the franchise forever.
